Attribution: Prou 712; M&G 396; Depeyrot 607; MEC I 758; BM -, Melle mint in Aquitaine
Date: 814-840 AD
Obverse: H LVDOVVICVS IMP AVG, laureate and draped bust right
Reverse: +METALLVM, pair of coining dies joined, and flanked by hammers
Size: 17.6 x 19.6 mm
Weight: 1.43 grams
Rarity: 8
Description: Near VF with a ragged flan (the ragged area does not have a sharp edge that one would expect if a coin broke after striking, so I believe it was struck on a ragged flan). Nicely toned. This is a particularly interesting type for Louis the Pius, in part because it has his portrait, but also because the reverse shows dies and hammers, representing the medieval minting tools of that time.
